A Comparative Study on Health Expenditures by Dual Earner and Non-dual Earner

Abstract
Objectives : This study is to identify the changes in proportion of health consumption expenditures over total
household¡¯s expenditures from 1990 and 2011 and to find the differences of specific health expenditures by Dual Earner and Non-dual Earner.

Methods : The data for this study was taken from the raw data of consumption expenditure (1. Food and non-alcoholic beverages, 2. Alcoholic beverages, tobacco, 3. Clothing & footwear, 4. Housing, water, electricity, gas & other fuels, 5. Furnishings, household equipment & routine household maintenance, 6. Health, 7.
Transport, Communication, Recreation & culture, 8. Education, Restaurants & hotels, 9. Miscellaneous goods &
services) from the 1990 to 2011 provided by Korea National Statistical Office. T-test and regression for the
analysis were used by using SAS program.

Results : The main findings are as follows: 1) The proportions of health, transport, communication, recreation
& culture, education, restaurants and hotels, and other miscellaneous good and services) have increased while the proportions of food and non-alcoholic beverages, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, clothing & footwear, housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, housing, water, electricity, gas & other fuels have decreased; 2) The monthly average health consumption expenditures for medical product, medical appliance, dental medical service and other medical services by dual earner were higher than those of non-dual earner; and 3) Income elasticities of medical product, other medical product, medical appliances, out-patients hospital services, dental medical services, other medical services, in-patients hospital services for dual earners were 0.832, 0.410, 1.381, 1.056, 0.980, 1.474, 2.342, and 1.803, respectively and income elasticities for non-dual earner were 0.853, 0.636, 1.167, 0.676, 1.112, 1.402, 3.283, and 1.338, respectively.
